1. Effects on Human Tear Film, of Applying Skin Lipids to the Ocular Surface. Kokkinakis, Jim; Schuett, Burkhardt S.; Millar, Thomas J. Cornea. 42(12):1562-1571, December 2023.
In this peer reviewed article the tear film was visualised using TearView and fluorescein staining to study the effect of skin lipids contamination.
It was shown that skin lipids destroy the tear film and cause damage to the corneal surface. It was also shown for the first time that skin lipid contamination of the lower eye lid stimulates the release of meibominan lipids.
TearView has revealed that a likely role of meibum spread on the eyelid margin is to provide a protective barrier to skin lipids entering the eye.
2. High Resolution Ocular Surface Imaging: Real-Time Visualisation of Tear Film Dysfunction. Minas T. Coroneo; Jim Kokkinakis; Brendon W.H. Lee; Helen Chen; Lien Tat. Cornea 2024 (accepted)
This study that will be published in the peer reviewed journal Cornea was aimed to show whether TearView images could be graded. This grading was compared to the dry eye diagnostic data from the K5M Keratograph.
TearView imaging allows for easy grading that can be done in a few seconds and different appearances of an unhealthy tear film can be discriminated. It is also shown here that certain grading parameter significantly correlate with non-invasive tear film break-up time and tear volume.
